Ah, the relaxing joys of a luxury condo getaway. Just
hearing those words instantly puts you in vacation frame of mind, right? And
well they should—as long as you’ve got a rental contract in place that
minimizes the potential for problems, protects you in case something goes
wrong, and maximizes your opportunities to get the most bang for your vacation
buck.
If you’re in the process of booking your next vacation right
now and investigating condo rental options, here are a few questions you need
to be sure and ask before you ink a deal:
One: What are my
cancellation options?
Since even the best laid plans can go astray, it’s important
that you know what you’re on the hook for if an emergency prevents you from
taking your vacation. Ask the owner about her refund policies, being sure to
clarify any points of confusion, and make sure that said policies are spelled
out in writing in your contract.
Two: Does the unit
have a history of maintenance problems?
If the toilet’s sensitive or the shower tends to leak if you
don’t shut it off tight, you’ll want to know. Also, ask what the owner’s
expectations or available resources are in the event of a property management
emergency.
Three: What’s
included on the property or available on site?
Each luxury condo is a little bit different, so you’ll want
to find out if you need to bring certain appliances with you or be ready for
any kind of Plan B. Specific items you’ll want to investigate include hair
dryers, coffee makers, microwave ovens, blenders, linens, music players, etc.
Four: Who has access
to the condo?
If anyone besides you and the owner has the ability to enter
the condo, find out who they are and why they have access. If the owner tells
you that certain service providers have access, ask more questions about them
and find out if they are expected to visit the property during your stay. Don’t
be shy about asking the owner how long a provider has worked for him, or any other
questions that give you a better understanding about the character and
background of who might be entering the property without your permission.
Five: Are there any
hidden fees or upcharges?
Before you sign, ask the luxury condo owner if there is
anything that guests might reasonably be expected to be covered as part of the
rental fee—but in fact isn’t. You might be surprised to learn that there are
charges for parking, cable TV or Wi-Fi access that aren’t spelled out, or
highly punitive late fees or security deposit policies.
